MEET ALECIA

“A nonprofit Johnny Appleseed”

Appointed the inaugural 2025 Texas State Classical Musician, Juilliard and SMU graduate, Alecia Lawyer, calls her work “Wildcatting in the Arts,” boldly drilling new wells of possibility in the traditionally rigid field of classical music.

Leading from the stage as well as the board room, Alecia is in demand as a speaker and consultant in wide ranging fields from the intelligence sector and medical field to technology start ups, AI, and commercial real estate. Her innovative and creative approach transforms businesses and reveals connections and unexplored pathways to success.

Called “the Johnny Appleseed of arts nonprofits,” Alecia is the Founder, Artistic Director, and Principal Oboist of ROCO, Houston’s deeply local and globally relevant 40-piece professional orchestra now in its 21st season. Through Alecia’s work building ROCO as a ‘human-first’ orchestra, the organization has achieved;

  • Pay-What-You-Wish ticketing model, resulting in 95% donated revenue for a $2.2 million annual budget

  • Building a multi-generational audience through ROCOrooters music education/childcare program during and after some of ROCO’s concerts

  • 155 commissioned world premieres from living composers

  • ROCO on the Go, which uses QR codes linked to curated playlists of ROCO’s music in Houston’s parks, hospitals, and schools, reaching 55,000+ scans

  • Recognition as a  worldwide leader in programming women composers and composers of color, second only to the BBC Symphony

  • First album recognized with a GRAMMY® for Producer of the Year, Blanton Alspaugh

  • Livestreaming for free to the world since 2013 viewed on all seven continents

  • Embracing technology through ROCO’s interactive digital app and ability to view sheet music to scores and parts in real time during the performance

One of Musical America’s Top 30 Influencers and Houston’s Top 50 Most Influential Women, Alecia is a senior fellow of American Leadership Forum; serves on the boards of Houston Youth Symphony and Houston Center for Musical Arts; the Advisory Board for Texas Music Festival; and is an artistic advisor for the St. Barth Music Festival in the French Virgin Islands. She is also an advisor to the Eden Arts Festival in Utah. She has two fabulous sons with her husband, Larry, and loves their weekend Harley rides.
